Bike brakes usually squeak because the braking surfaces are wet, dirty, contaminated, misaligned or worn. The noise may be harmless in damp conditions, but persistent squealing can also warn you that braking performance has reduced or a component needs attention.
Rim brakes and disc brakes can both become noisy, although the likely causes and correct fixes differ. Spraying lubricant near the brake is never the answer and can make the bike unsafe.

The most common causes are:
Noise alone does not identify the cause. Pay attention to stopping power, lever feel and whether the sound comes from the front or rear brake.
Water can temporarily reduce friction and create a high-pitched noise as the pads clear moisture from the rim or rotor. The sound often improves after several controlled brake applications.
In heavy rain, stopping distances may increase. Ride more slowly, brake earlier and leave additional space even if the noise disappears.
Chain lubricant, aerosol sprays, car-cleaning products and road residue can transfer onto a rotor, rim or brake pad. Disc-brake pads are particularly porous and may absorb contamination.
Cleaning the rotor alone may not solve the problem if the pads are affected. Contaminated pads often need replacing, followed by correct bedding-in.
Rim-brake pads should contact the correct area of the rim and may require a small amount of toe-in so the leading edge touches first. Disc calipers must sit centrally around the rotor.
Poor alignment can create vibration, rubbing and uneven pad wear. A bent rotor or wheel that is out of true can produce similar symptoms.
Brake pads gradually wear thinner. Heat, repeated dragging or contamination can also harden and polish the surface, a condition commonly described as glazing.
Glazed pads may look shiny and make noise while providing inconsistent bite. Pads below the manufacturer’s wear limit should be replaced rather than reshaped.
A loose caliper, worn mounting hardware, damaged rotor or movement in the wheel bearings can allow the brake system to vibrate. Incompatible pad and rotor combinations can also be unusually noisy.
Do not simply tighten every bolt as hard as possible. Brake components must be fitted correctly and tightened to the appropriate specification.
